OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock

Andrew O'Hara on September 7, OWC has made a name for itself with high quality accessories and upgrades for your Mac. Their vision of the Thunderbolt 3 docking station is well thought out, making it one of the few to offer an SD card reader, Firewireand a headset jack. As a pro user, docks are vital pieces of my desk setup.

OWC does an admirable job of this goal, but still has a few of the pitfalls similar to other Thunderbolt 3 docks on the market. The OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock is a docking station that works over the updated Thunderbolt 3 spec to offer everything you need through a single cable. The idea is you can sit down at your desk, plug in the dock, and have access to a card reader, a monitor, any additional hard drives, and ethernet.

It is a much better workflow than plugging in several different things and purchasing a variety of different adapters.

Like others, it is also able to provide power to your machine. If you have one of the new MacBook Pros, it can provide up to 60 watts of power through the same cable. That means you can tuck your Apple charger in your bag, and save it for on the go. Included in the box is the actual dock itself, a bulky power adapter, and a Thunderbolt 3 cable. There are a lot of smart options here. A few we rarely see include the SD card reader, optical audio, and Firewire Optical audio is also nice, especially if you have a pro sound setup for audio mixing.

You can count myself in that particular category. There are a few other decisions that I think are also well thought out. Mini DisplayPort is much preferred over DisplayPort. It is also just quite a bit smaller than the full size we see on other manufacturers.

If you do connect a monitor, you can drive a single 5K monitor or a pair of 4K monitors. The Thunderbolt 3 ports in this case also work both ways. In other models like the impressive CalDigit, one port was specifically for plugging in your Mac, while the other was for expansion and other peripherals. Speaking of other peripherals, you can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt 3 devices to the OWC dock.

With more and more options for a great Thunderbolt 3 dock, it is harder for companies to differentiate themselves. When connected via the display port one will display at 4k while the other will only display X I had bought a a couple of CableMatters thunderbolt 3 X display port adapters while waiting on the dock.

If I plug one of the monitors in using the adapter and the other into the display port both will display 4K. After the computer goes to sleep only one monitor will wake up. Only way to get the second monitor awake is to shutdown and reboot. I have the displays configured to go blank after 1 hour. Once this occurs and I enter my password all of my open programs are displayed on one screen rather than on both. This would be normal if you have undocked and re-docked a laptop.

If the laptop is opened while docked. One display goes blank and one is duplicated with the laptop screen.

This is not typical docked behavior. I'm really questioning my whether this was an upgrade. This leads to, sometimes, unexpected behavior. For example, the dock has a separate ethernet controller with its own driver, it has a driver to manage the usb ports, and it has a driver to manage the dp ports and the vga port. With all those things going on, there may be an occasion where if the laptop is allowed to go to sleep, some drivers may or may not come back correctly or in the correct sequence.

For example, the usb-c drivers should restart first. Exactly, exactly as I have experienced.

Even upgrading form the w laptop. I have also observed:. A longer cable might help here. Also, the power button being directly opposite the thunderbolt connector causes the power button to be pressed unintentionally when reseating the cable. From a powered off state, lid closed, plug the PC into the dock, power on from the dock power button. The monitors come alive for a few minutes then turn off. Seems like the dock is disconnected but the mouse and keyboard continue to work.

Opening the laptop sometimes brings the monitors back, sometimes not. With two external DVI monitors installed the laptop display and one of the monitors are identified as "1 2" and the second external monitor is "3". I have applied several updates but there has been no definitive list until this one.The notebooks on the market today are dramatically faster than previous generations, but as manufacturers push to make them smaller, it has left users with far fewer connectivity options.

It used to be common to find LAN ports or even USB-A on notebooksbut common legacy ports are being chopped from platforms left and right. To help with the struggle, OWC is offering a way for users to have these ultra-compact devices or just regular computers that need more connectivity with its OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock.

The first thing that would come to mind for creative professionals would be fast card readers. The dock has both an SD card reader and a CFast card reader right up front. The dock leverages 4. The Dock also has three USB 3. If users have other USB connected devices keyboards, mice, or printers they can connect them here as well.

Where this dock sets itself apart from the others on the market it multi-facetted. For one, the dock comes with a built in 10G-baseT LAN port for fast transfers to and from network connected devices.

For content creators, Wi-Fi is nowhere near as fast as a hardwired network connection, especially when it comes to reliability and overall throughput. The dock also has two Thunderbolt 3 ports with one being a 60W for charging notebooks and a 15W that allows for daisy-chaining addition Thunderbolt 3 devices.

There is a DisplayPort for connecting to an additional 4K monitor or TV or projector that is more likely for creative professionals. There is an eSATA port to connect to a multi-bay external drive device. The dock has an open top, which helps when it comes to cooling. For desk warriors these days, desk real estate is at a premium and we frequently find outselves stacking things.

Since this docking station has an active cooling fan, stacking on top of the docking station might create a situation of blocked airflow. Flipping the device around we see the much more crowded backside. The bottom has four rubber legs and information such as serial number.

The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock is a one-size-fits-all dock for users that like their device but need more connectivity, particularly power users and creative professionals. The dock comes with standard ports one would expect for creative professionals, such as USB 3.

The dock has something other interesting features such as an eSATA port to connect it to larger storage directly, a nice addition for move and storing raw files. There is a DisplayPort that will allow the dock to connect to 4K devices such as monitors, projectors, or TVs.

One port to note here is the 10Gb network port. Not only does this allow for fast transfers to a server, it is a way to connect notebooks with no networking ports to a very fast networking fabric.

From a performance perspective this type of solution is a technology enabler, allowing professionals to connect a plethora of devices to an interface-limited notebook.

Performance will utlimately come down to the devices used through the docking station, or the notebook itself in regards to its USB-C port bandwidth.

Whether users need the dock to connect everything at their desk or in the field on a DIT cart, the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock goes above and beyond other docks to give creative professionals a cost-effective and efficient way to manage their files. What looks and sounds great turned out to be rather frustrating in the daily use. I have numerous issues with it, as follows. LAN port ethernet is not connecting after the MacBooks start or a restart.

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock Review

The only thing that currently helps is unplugging the LAN cable, and plug it back it. How convenient. I have two USB drives connected to the dock. When the MacBook sleeps, I see the drives shutdown and restart roughly every three minutes. That must kill any conventional hard disk within months, I guess.

There's no way to overcome this, I have tried all USB ports. I had the external monitor I'm using the MacBook in clamshell mode connected via the dock's mini display port MDPwhich didn't work at all - frequent MacBook freezes, or not reacting after a sleep.

More or less means that when the MacBook is sleeping, the monitor keeps blinking up and going back to sleep every three minutes - same as the drives. Then, I called OWC support, explaining. After waiting for 20min or so in their queue, I could talk to someone.

His reply was simply that this is the way it is and that they could do nothing as everything was Apple's fault, and that they're waiting for Apple to change this and that in the software. So, totally helpful. I bought the dock because I thought it allows me to have a little more order in the cables, and speedier connections. But what I got does not allow for seamless working, just hassle.

The new OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock shines with versatility, supporting either one or two 4K monitors, or alternatively one 5K monitor connected to the second Thunderbolt 3 port.

Unlike the Sharp 5k screen, the Apple Display is a full dock in itself. The OWC dock is great, but needs more TB3 ports, at least 3 on the back, and at least 1 on on the front. Many peripherals do not have an extra TB port… so that uses up the Docks second. The 5K Sharp screen does not support daisy chaining either.

One thing I do know is that configuring the number of various ports and their quantity is much like a shell game. There is only so much throughput supported by Thunderbolt 3, so you can start running into severe performance problems. OWC is actively working on potential solutions for this. Thanks for the suggestion — we always love receiving input from our customers. Any chance of CFExpress 2. Is it possible to build a USB 3.

Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock

That would be great! Are you talking about something like this port hub? Yes, something like that, simpler or more complex. The important thing is to split a single Mac USB 3.

I have not found such splitter or hubs. Not even a male to female Thunderbolt 3 port protector or extension cable. The company that makes them will make lots of money. We need tons for our University. Pricing is not a problem for us. Are them technically possible or is there any problem, including Intel licensing issues in the case of Thunderbolt 3? Can OWC make them? I had a quick conversation with one of our engineers, and he said that there are too many technical limitations right now as performance degrades dramatically.

When he has time, he may put a blog post together to talk more about the science and specifics, perhaps even with some metrics. In such a case, a great and useful workaround would be a hub-dock with multiple ports, but which only allows one, two or whatever limit of connected devices to work at once concurrently. That could be controlled with manual switches, or automatically, if possible controlling the number of mounted devices on the Mac desktop.

For instance, 10 devices could be connected all the time, but only one, two or whatever limited mounted concurrently. Once the user unmounts one or more of them, a new one or more can be mounted until reaching the limit of mounted devices.
